Cathelco is the world's leading manufacturer and supplier of marine cathodic protection systems. The strength of the company in this field provides a stable and sustained income stream to the rest of the Group. For many years the Group had invested in property to provide asset strength to the engineering businesses but in 1996 a strategic decision was made to become actively involved in property development.

Property development is a good fit with the engineering businesses because they are different but complementary. Engineering provides a steady and predictable income stream, property development income is infrequent and more volatile but gives potentially higher margins. Engineering is labour intensive, property is capital intensive. By having both facets within the Group each benefits from the other.

Cathelco does not formally limit its property activities geographically but tends to concentrate in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire. Our development activities have covered a wide variety of property types, some of the projects currently underway or completed are set out below:

Residential

  • Restoration and resale of an estate of 85 dwellings in West Yorkshire.
  • Redevelopment and restoration of 6 houses and 8 apartments in London.
  • Masterplanning the conversion of a former Hydro and grounds into unique dwellings and affordable housing in Ashover, Derbyshire.
  • Redevelopment of a site in Sheffield for 20 apartments.
  • Restoration and new development of a listed building and grounds to provide 11 new dwellings in Bakewell.
  • Restoration of a Grade II* listed building as a single residence.

Retail

  • Site assembly for retail warehousing in Chesterfield.

Leisure

  • Purchase of a cinema and reletting as a night club in Chesterfield

Industrial

  • Purchase, letting to Associated British Ports and investment sale of a shipyard in Troon, Scotland.

Offices

  • Development of an office park in Chesterfield.
  • Purchase, letting to Secretary of State for the Environment and investment sale of office block in Chesterfield.

Student Accommodation

  • Purchase of an industrial building in Sheffield for reuse as student accommodation.
